Getting your car ready for a Sunshine Coast summer.
Elegance Car Detailing · Noosa & Sunshine Coast · 6 min read
Summer on the Sunshine Coast is hard on cars. The UV is intense, the cabin turns into an oven by mid-morning, and salt air settles on everything. A bit of preparation now saves you from faded dashboards, cracked leather and baked-on paint damage later.
Here's the checklist we'd run through before the real heat arrives. Some of it you can do yourself this weekend. The rest is worth booking in before summer gets busy.
Seven things to sort before summer.
Tint your windows with ceramic film
If you only do one thing, make it this. Most of the heat that builds up in a parked car comes straight through the glass. Ceramic tint rejects a large share of that heat, blocks 99.9% of UV, and cuts glare on every drive.
It's the difference between getting into a car that's warm and one that's unbearable. We use Black Armor ceramic film and fit it at your home or workplace. See our car window tinting service.
Check your old tint
Old dyed tint often turns purple, bubbles or starts peeling at the edges, especially after a few Queensland summers. Once it gets to that point, it's not doing much against heat or UV and it makes the car look tired.
Failing film can be removed and replaced. Removal starts from $44 a window or $220 for a full car, and we can re-tint in the same visit.
Protect the dash, seats and leather
UV is what fades dashboards, dries out leather and cracks vinyl over time. A good windscreen sunshade helps when you're parked, and a quality UV protectant on the dash and trims adds another layer.
Tint does the heavy lifting here because it works all the time, whether you're parked or driving. Leather and dark interiors benefit the most.
Get ahead of paint damage
Heat makes everything that lands on your paint more aggressive. Bird and bat droppings, tree sap and salt spray can etch into the clear coat quickly when the panels are hot. Wash them off as soon as you can, and rinse the car after beach trips.
For longer-term protection, a ceramic coating adds a hard, glossy layer that makes the paint easier to clean and more resistant to the sun. We offer certified System X ceramic coatings.
Fix chips before the heat spreads them
Big temperature swings, like blasting the air-con on a windscreen that's been sitting in the sun, put stress on the glass. A small chip can turn into a crack that needs a full replacement.
Get chips repaired early. If you do a lot of highway or gravel driving, ask us about windscreen protection film, a clear layer that helps protect the glass from stone chips.
Clean your glass properly
Summer glare is worse through a hazy windscreen. Clean the inside and outside of the glass with a soft microfibre cloth. If your windows are tinted, use an ammonia-free cleaner, because ammonia can damage window film over time.
Never leave kids or pets in a parked car
This one matters more than anything on the list. Even with tint, a sunshade and the windows cracked, the inside of a parked car can reach dangerous temperatures within minutes on a warm day. Tint makes a car more comfortable to get into, but it never makes it safe to leave anyone inside.
Already have factory privacy glass? It looks dark, but it's tinted glass rather than a film, so it does little to stop heat or UV. Here's why it's still worth tinting.
"The finish was flawless. Professional, punctual, and the tint completely transformed the car."
Elegance customerWhy book before summer.
Tint needs a short curing period after it's fitted, and mild spring weather is a comfortable time to have it done. More importantly, you get the benefit for the whole summer instead of halfway through it.
Because we're mobile, there's no workshop drop-off. We come to your home or workplace anywhere across Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, and a full tint takes about half a day. If you're not sure what to expect on cost, our window tinting cost guide covers what affects the price.
Summer tint questions.
Does window tint really make a car cooler?
Yes. Ceramic film rejects a large share of the heat coming through the glass, so the cabin heats up more slowly and cools down faster once the air-con is on. The difference is most noticeable after the car has been parked in the sun.
Is ceramic tint better than regular tint for summer?
For heat, yes. Dyed tint mainly darkens the glass, while ceramic film is designed to reject heat and block UV without fading or turning purple. Read our ceramic vs regular tint comparison.
How dark can I tint my car in Queensland?
Front side windows must let through at least 35% of visible light, and on passenger cars the rear side windows and rear windscreen must let through at least 20%. The windscreen can only have a tint strip across the top. We'll recommend a legal shade that suits your car.
Can I drive my car straight after it's tinted?
Yes. You can drive it as soon as we've finished. Just avoid winding the windows down or cleaning the inside of the glass while the film cures. We'll tell you exactly how long on the day.
